It’s the horse race the stops the nation. But it’s the fashion that keeps us watching.

LCI Melbourne Fashion & Costume Design alumni, Mark Blake, was one of ten finalists selected to present his work for the 2019 Melbourne Cup Emerging Designer Award, as part of the Myer Fashions on the Field, runway.

An integral part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Myer Fashions on the Field is the largest and most prestigious outdoor fashion event in the country. It has been running for over 56 years.

“I found my perfect fabric and worked on the shape by draping the fabric on my form and building it up. The hips had 2 sets of shoulder pads in them to make them pop out like they do. I wanted something spring and fresh and fun to match the bright airy pattern of the fabric,” Blake explained.

“It was such a surreal experience. I’m so glad I was able to be a part of it!”

This year, the Victorian Racing Club, in partnership with Myer, refocused the annual Design Award, to unearth emerging designers and provide an opportunity to showcase their creativity and designs, and nurture emerging talent in the Australian fashion industry.

Blake has featured work in numerous runways including the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival and Australian Fashion Awards, and continues to grow his extraordinary collection in Melbourne.
