Academy of Design alumni Johnathan Akiki (2016) landed a prized position upon graduating as a Communication Design Major: Junior Art Director at Magnum Opus Partners.
He has already been involved in a high profile campaign that has captured the attention of a range of audiences, from the renowned online industry journal Campaign Brief, to popular family website Mumbrella.
The poster and film campaign for Kilvington Grammar School highlights the wide-reaching impact of teachers on their students. It was created in celebration of World Teacher’s Day, and is based on the popular 'spoken word slam' format.
As the Art Director of the campaign, Johnathan believes it was the education he received at the Academy that enabled him to contribute to a successful project, at this early stage of his career.
“I will always appreciate the hard work and time the Academy staff invested into making sure that students understood what it took to be successful in the industry – you told us to work hard, to be patient, to be the first one in the office and the last one to leave, and of course, to always stay hungry,” Johnathan says.
Johnathan sees the campaign as a kind of tribute to Academy of Design staff, including his Course Coordinator Donna O’Neill.
“It’s only fitting that my first ever piece of creative work in an ad agency is a celebration of the hard work and commitment that teachers and tutors like Donna put in.”
