Visual artist, cheerful LCI Melbourne intern and upcycling extraordinaire, Amy Graham, shares her experience preparing for the I’M AN ARTIST’ group exhibition and launch.

Amy Graham is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in Warrandyte, Melbourne. She deals with the materiality of scavenged things and the relationships we have with those things, the places they came from and the meanings they hold. Her practice is largely experimental and the intuitive nature in which she works, brings out the natural beauty of things otherwise unnoticed.

After a challenging year of lockdowns and uncertainty, this trimesters Design Lab 4 Visual Arts students have finally been able to get into the LCI gallery space to put together our ‘I’M AN ARTIST’ group exhibition. To say we are excited is an understatement!

The gallery has been vacant for most of the year so there has definitely been buzz around the campus in the lead up, with everyone excited to have art and guests back in the space again.

There were challenges early on with the ever-changing restrictions and we have had to manage COVID safe information and guidelines as they were updated. From how many people we can have in the space at one time, to disinfecting all the many touch points, to what type of refreshments we could offer, it has been a difficult yet valuable learning experience for us all.

For the collective, creating the work to exhibit has only been a small (but important!) part of the process. Luckily, we have had Virginia Dowzer and Amber Smith, an amazing team to guide us through step by step.

Many hours were spent in the gallery cleaning and painting the long empty space until it was shiny and bright, ready for all of the incredible work everyone has put so many hours into.

What a joy and privilege it has been to work with an amazing and talented group of students, who have looked out for each other and helped whenever needed. The install process was definitely an all-hands-on deck affair!

Thursday 10 December marked the grand opening of ‘I’M AN ARTIST’. The entire collective was full of excitement and pride, welcoming our guests in to experience and celebrate all that we had created and achieved.

Thank you to everyone that joined us at the launch from: Maddi Simpkins, Josh Cameron (Nax), Sam Bryant, Tali Worth, Christy Grant, Fariha Rahman, Rheanna Williams and me (Amy Graham)! There were smiles all around and it was amazing to see our planning and hard work pay off.

Just as it sounds, ‘I’M AN ARTIST’ is the event you’ve been longing for all isolation.
