This instalment of our ‘On the Couch with Dean Webster’ series, is an engaging virtual interview; with Karen Webster and Interior Design dynamo, David Clark.
David is highly regarded for spearheading the success of Vogue Living Australia, during his 10 years as editor. Karen and David spoke about his inspiring journey, from law to the world of interior design and everything in between!
“When I was a teenager my family nickname was Mr. Vogue Living”
After completing a Bachelor of Commerce, David moved to Sydney in search of a more creative path. The world of design enticed David, he spent 10 years working in the textile industry in Sydney, before moving to London to work with the Designers Guild.
David returned to Australia to complete a Bachelor of Design Studies and pursue his Interior Design dreams; before he was pulled into publishing by the editor of Belle Magazine.
Vogue Living Australia then provided David with a rare opportunity to feature on an internationally renowned masthead, while he transformed the magazine into a globally regarded household name.
“Once I started in magazines I knew then I wanted to be an editor”
David’s career has shifted perspectives in various ways, but his focus has always come back to interiors and design. He has developed a nuanced aesthetic that not only enriched the magazines he worked for; but also defined the distinctive and exotic ethos of Australian design.
“I wanted to push the idea of an idiosyncratic quirkiness that was Australian”
David also shared his insights into the importance of strengthening our domestic economy through design. The re-appreciation of Australian makers for an Australian economy is prospering. Now is the time for Australian designers to get their product into a domestic market; producing something designed here, made here and sold here.
“Design needs to have a place in the world, in trying to contribute to a solution for global problems”
