Contemporary Botanicals

In this short course learn from renowned artist Melanie Caple to paint flowers and plants and use a range of mixed media including collage, pencil and watercolour to create your own contemporary botanical drawings. Through informative demonstrations and personal guidance, discover how to achieve intricate detail and bring your artworks to a new level of realism.

Course objectives

  • Learn to observe and interpret flower and plant arrangements through drawing and painting. 
  • Experiment with a range of materials including collage, drawing and painting. 
  • Learn a wide range of techiniques with a variety of brushes and drawing tools 
  • Learn to create dynamic compositions and patterns using floral motifs. 
  • Develop your visual language.

Meet your teacher | Melanie Caple

Melanie is a talented and energetic artist, curator and arts manager who has worked in multiple capacities within the arts industry. She has exhibited in various group exhibitions and has staged solo exhibitions around Melbourne and in Gippsland including a major solo exhibition in 2015 at the Latrobe Regional Gallery as the recipient of the annual Dick Bishop Memorial Award. Most recently she was the Winner of the People’s Choice Award in the Roi Art Prize in 2016.

Required Materials

  • a pad of hot pressed / smooth paper, A3 size
  • range of grey lead pencils - 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B 
  • kneadable eraser
  • set of watercolour pencils or watercolour paints. (Note - when choosing colours, think about the colours that can be found in botanicals. I recommend at least a rich blue, brown, bright green and a muted green, yellow, pink, white, black.)
  • small bottle of black ink
